What We Do

The clinical trial often starts with an idea. Then, proceed to the lab where researchers test new treatments or procedures in the lab and in animals in some cases. If the treatment shows promise, it transitions into a clinical trial. After the new treatment transitions into a clinical trial, a series of phases are introduced where more information about safety and effectiveness is obtained.

Participants in clinical trials span all races, creeds, and economic and social statuses. People participate in clinical trials for various reasons. Healthy volunteers often participate with the goal to help others and contributing to moving science forward. People with an illness or disease also participate with a goal to help others, but also to possibly receive the most recent treatment options and to obtain additional care and attention from the clinical trial staff. Clinical trials offer hope for many people and a chance to help researchers and better treatments for others in the future. However, minorities account for approximately ten percent of clinical trials participation.

Clinical trials involve risk as with routine medical care and daily living activities. When considering the risks, ask yourself two questions:

1. What is the chance of harm occurring?

2. What is the level of harm that can result from my participation?

Our research team describes risks and benefits in great detail prior to beginning the clinical trial. The potential benefits of participation in clinical trials include being an active participant in your health, access to new advances in treatments before they are available to the general public, additional medical attention from a team of doctors and nurse practitioners, and helping others with your participation in medical research. I am committed to protecting health information about you. I create a record of the care and services you receive from me. I need this record to provide you with quality care and to comply with certain legal requirements. This notice applies to all of the records of your care generated by this practice. This notice will tell you about how I may use and disclose health information about you. I also describe your rights to the health information I keep about you and my obligations regarding the use and disclosure of your health information. I am required by law to:

• Make sure that protected health information (“PHI”) that identifies you is kept private.

• Give you this notice of my legal duties and privacy practices concerning health information.

• Follow the terms of the notice that is currently in effect.

Since 1996 certain laws have been enforced regarding medical record privacy (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) or HIPAA; under the law, we are now required to notify you of this, so here is a short version of these regulations for your convenience. This Notice of Privacy Practices describes the ways we are allowed by law to use your protected health information (medical records) or PHI to carry out treatment, payment, or other healthcare operations and for other purposes that are permitted or requested by law. It also describes our rights to access and control your PHI. We are required to abide by these privacy laws. According to the privacy laws, your physician will use your PHI as he has always done for treatment, payment, or other health care operations. In addition, we may also disclose your PHI from time to time to other physicians or healthcare providers who become involved in taking care of you. Your PHI will be used, as needed, for us to obtain payment for our services. At the front desk, you will be asked to complete the paperwork; we will call you by name when the provider is ready to see you. We may also use your PHI when necessary to contact you concerning your visit. We will share your PHI with business associates who perform services for us. There could include billing services or transcribing services. They are also required to maintain confidentiality. Your PHI could be used to provide you with information about treatment alternatives or other health-related benefits and services that may interest you. Other uses or disclosures will be made only with your written authorization unless otherwise allowed or required by law. You may revoke this authorization at any time in writing. Unless you object, we may reveal (with your signed consent) to a member of your family, close friend, or other person of your choice parts of your PHI that relate to that person’s involvement in your health care. If you cannot agree or object to this, as in an emergency, your physician will try to obtain your consent as soon as possible. Your PHI may be disclosed to public health agencies or law enforcement to protect you or others. We may disclose your PHI to comply with workman’s compensation laws. If you are an inmate, we may disclose necessary information to the institution's staff. You can inspect and copy your PHI except for certain legal limitations. You may ask us not to disclose your PHI for purposes of treatment, payment, or health care operations, as well as family members. This must be specific and in writing. However, your doctor must not agree to such restrictions if he believes it is not in your best interest. You may ask for your PHI to be amended. You also have the right to know to whom we have revealed your information if it is other than treatment, payment, or health care operations.
